Celebrating Native American Heritage Month: Honoring Culture, Community, and Connection
This November, we celebrate Native American Heritage Month—a time dedicated to recognizing and honoring the rich history, vibrant culture, and enduring contributions of Native American communities. For the Northwest American Indian Coalition (NAIC), it’s also an opportunity to bring our community together, share stories, and deepen our understanding of the heritage that shapes our lives and landscapes.
Native American Heritage Month aligns with the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), specifically Article 15, which states:
"Indigenous peoples have the right to the dignity and diversity of their cultures, traditions, histories, and aspirations, which shall be appropriately reflected in education and public information."
This powerful statement highlights the importance of ensuring that Indigenous voices, histories, and cultural pride are present in education, media, and public spaces. November is the month to elevate Native voices from the past and the present and to celebrate by carrying their messages forward to future generations. Today, and every day, is the time for Indigenous people to embrace self-determination, acknowledge resilience, and assert native pride and culture as a fundamental right.
