Northwest American Indian Coalition Receives Charlotte Martin Foundation Grant for Vital Conservation Project

Brookings, Oregon  – 23 Aug 2024– The Northwest American Indian Coalition (NAIC) is honored to announce that it has been selected as a 2024 recipient of the prestigious Charlotte Martin Foundation - Conserving Biodiversity in a Changing Climate grant. This significant funding will enable NAIC to implement the Curry County Springs and Headwaters Adaptive Restoration and Protection (C-SHARP) program, a critical initiative aimed at preserving the ecological health and biodiversity of our county’s water sources.

The C-SHARP program focuses on identifying, monitoring, and protecting the vital spring and headwater sources within the region. These water sources play an essential role in maintaining the biodiversity and ecological balance of Curry County forests, especially in the face of increasing threats from climate change and wildfires and other risks.

"Our team at NAIC is deeply grateful to the Charlotte Martin Foundation for their support of this important work," said Katrina Thompson-Upton, Founder of NAIC. "With the C-SHARP program, we aim to systematically track the health of these water sources, understand the impacts of environmental changes, and advocate for their protection and restoration. This project not only conserves our natural resources but also honors the deep connection between our people and the land and water."

The C-SHARP program will employ a combination of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and modern scientific practices to monitor and protect these critical water sources. By doing so, NAIC seeks to ensure the long-term resilience of the region's ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

The Charlotte Martin Foundation is known for its commitment to conserving biodiversity in the face of climate change. The foundation’s support will allow NAIC to take meaningful action in preserving the natural heritage of Curry County.
